LM Starks

My work combines illustration, sculpture, and animation to explore themes of nostalgia, fear, and distorted memory through the eyes of a child. By comparing the relationship children today have with technology to that of past generations, I can explore the evolution of the psychological and cultural impact of digital media on different eras of youth.
The gradual transition from a classic storybook childhood to one that is often overloaded by unregulated sources of information and entertainment spans multiple generations. Each one is introduced to new informational structures at younger and younger ages. While these innovations like the internet and social media meaningfully connect the world around us, they can evolve faster than people (or regulations) can keep up with, resulting in overstimulated groups of people that lack the capabilities or experience to accurately navigate the landscape.
My animations experiment with different mediums, sequences, and settings to study the shift between the “traditional” past and the theoretical future of this rapidly developing resource in our society from the perspective of children throughout the years.
